About Dr Helen Kennerley's "Socratic Methods in clinical practice: a reminder of our skills base and applying it to typed therapy" workshops

Morning Session

Socratic Methods in CBT - a reminder of the theory and research

This presentation will address two questions:

  • What do psychotherapists mean by "Socratic Methods"?
  • Why should we use them in our practice?

We will explore how clinicians generally understand Socratic practices and will emphasise the versatility of these methods across psychological disorders. It will also present a justification for adopting Socratic approaches, drawing on research from outside and within the world of psychotherapy. Attention will be given to using Socratic techniques via a typed medium. Clinical examples will be used to illustrate practice and questions and discussions welcomed.

Afternoon Session

Socratic Methods in CBT - a reminder of our skills base

This presentation will cover:

  • How do we use Socratic Methods in our practice?
  • When do we avoid Socratic Methods?

In addressing these, attention will be given to using Socratic techniques via a typed medium.

We will address the Socratic practice itself and consider how Socratic methods are used to best advantage. In order to achieve this, clinicians need to know when not to employ them so the presentation will explore this issue. Clinical examples will be used to illustrate practice and questions and discussions welcomed.

About Liz Kell's "Working with Depression Interventions via text-based guided self-help"

This will be an opportunity for ieso affiliate PWPs to come together, meet each other, share ideas and hear from Liz Kell.

There is a strong evidence base for the effectiveness of Behavioural Activation. The protocol is well researched as an effective intervention delivered through the remit of guided self-help.  As the PWP role has developed and services have explored different ways of working, we need to reflect upon the tools and resources we use.

This session will focus on two different aspects of PWP work with depression.  The first half of the session will focus on BA and how best to engage patients in this highly effective intervention, considering how to facilitate this in a text-based interaction with patients, focusing on collaboration, to help both you and your patients have the best experience of the BA intervention.  The second half of the session will focus on the Negative Automatic Thoughts PWPs often encounter in sessions with patients who have depression and strategies and approaches to work effectively with these.

About Jo's "Fill Your Cup – Experiential Session – Using self-reflection and self-practice to help you thrive” workshop

We recognise how important it is to take good care of ourselves and know too well how difficult it can feel to carve out time to fill our own cups.

This is an experiential workshop designed to give you space to check in with and take care of you.

We will be bringing our therapy skills to our own lives – treating ourselves to some of the time, energy, care and compassion that we so readily show to others. Over the course of the workshop the facilitators will guide you through some experimental exercises and self-reflection prompts designed to help you reconnect with yourself in order to fill your cup.

Consider this an invitation to replenish your mental, emotional and physical energy and recharge your batteries with us.

This workshop will be repeated in the morning and the afternoon.
